Quote 1-
‘There is always a point at which the terrorist ceases to manipulate the media pattern. A point at which the violence may well escalate, but beyond which the terrorist has become symptomatic of the media gestalt itself. Terrorism as we ordinarily understand it is innately media-related.’
-Novelist William Gibson

Explanation:- Quote from the blog of William Gibson. The link between the quote made by the Novelist William Gibson with my area of study is about Terrorism and TV News and Crime shows creating a moral panic through what is shown/heard through the media. Here Gibson is saying that Terroism is affected by the media - What the media shows about Terrorism may not be right however, Terrorist, terrorise which gets into the medias limelight and is then reflected and the media do what they are told to do - to report back actions. It has alomost become like a pattern - Terrorism occurs and the media - mediate back through the many platforms.

Explanation:- This passage taken from the book - Media, Terrorism and Theory: A Reader by Anandam P. Kavoori and Todd Fraley, basically explains that there is no control over what is being broadcasted through the different platform as news. Terrorism and the actions by a Terrorist may have been edited as the media has the power to broadcast what they want and either write a bad review/story or a good - right and left wing, depending what organisation they are. This links to my Hypothesis by what they are saying as this is the whole point of my coursework and what we get shown throught TV shows and the News and Crime shows and if it creates a moral panic to society.

- 'Accordingly, social trends, general fears and aspirations, the staus of various groups and the power of ruling elites will be seen reflected in the media.'

- Propaganda can be politically contreversial (after Sept 11)- John Hartely

Historical Text and Analysis Task 3 x

I have decided to analyse a BBC News report about the 9/11 attacks that happened in USA on September the 11th in 2001 (being my contemporary text). I have decided to analyse this moving image as I can then analyse the language used to put across this story from different News programs and over the years how the society has been changed with what to think through the media reporting News from around the world regarding Terrorism and if it has created a moral panic within society. Also, looking at different platform and the way in which this has changed the way that the media has reflected views and different theories across the platform within society.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPh7ECq9sc0&feature=related

The link above is a YouTube link in which I have analyzed from the BBC News with the first story of the 9/11 attack on the ‘Twin Towers’, The World Trade Centre was attacked by alleged ‘terrorists’, ‘Muslims’ – ‘cowards’.

I have chosen to look at BBC News as, this organization do not take sides – Right Wing or Left – they are in the middle and simply just give facts of what has happened therefore, are simply just informing, which a News programmed should do.

Comparing this text with text from 2005; News reports from the London Bombings which happened on 7th July 2005 and with reference to other texts from News reports on different channels and across the platform such as Dramas such as ‘Britz’. As this will show a clear change if there is in what the media has done to the society and is broadcasting across the world.

The BBC News within 4 years from the report of the 9/11 attacks and the 7/7 London Bombings has not changed however, made a greater moral panic within society and Britain today. The way in which they have done this is by creating debates and issues about Terrorism and Terrorist attacks occurring more due to the attack on Muslims being responsible for these attacks.

The use of language that they use in the report about the 9/11 attacks, attack the Islamics as they state the reporter says ‘radical Islamists attacked the United States.’ And use words such as panic spread, ‘again’ as if not only once was enough they had to attack again almost being sarcastic in saying they are never satisfied and have to attack more that once, thousands – as they talked about the number of people killed during the attacks, symbol as the Twin Towers were a very famous and centre of attraction to the USA. ‘Struck heart of the world’s most powerful nation,’ was a quote in which the reporter had said making the audience of the world feel almost sorry and care for those in USA as the most important and personified the USA’s tourist/well known places.

The news reporter then creates a moral panic as he says ‘Tony Blair has put Britain on a high state of alert’. This creates a moral panic as the people of Britain and he does not know when and where Terrorists can attack and is not certain as they may decide and attack in the heart on BritainLondon.

I then looked at another text from which the London Bombings on 7/7 occurred as this was 4 years after the attacks on the USA. To see if this had changed anything with in society. I have concluded that the way in which now the society sees Muslims and people who practice the Islamic ways are now seen upon/hated in today’s world and often accused of things.

This change can be backed up by many films which have been created about the Attacks and Dramas on TV and programmes which have been created show the change and the way in which Muslims have been targeted and views have now changed about them by others in society.

An example of the change within society can be shown through for example the ‘Britz’, a drama based series in which is about a brother and sister who the drama is focused on as they follow them showing the different views and the different directions they take to not be attacked as a Terrorist as they are Muslim and British born. The drama shows the high level of security that London is faced with due to these Attacks and bombings have resulted the police and CIA to put down to protect the society and world. This shows the change within society to think differentlyabout terrorists and terrorism and also accuse the Muslim religion to be threat to where we live/around us, by demonstrating the accusations and preaching in what they believe in creates a moral panic and no denail of the attacks and bombings, thus making it worse for society as a moral panic is created.

2010 a new year, and stories about a bomb being plot on a US plane has been accused by Obamma to be plotted by Al-Qaeda on Christmas day. This then arises the fear of terrorism happening again in the US and creates a moral panic.

The alledged accusation that was made when the Twin Towers was attacked, was that they had been been a set up by Bush who set up the attacks on US himself, this involves the political parties to put togeher their debates and creates more of a hype as different side - right and left wing - have many views on what they think.

Research - History of News

18th Century - News Got Around by Word of Mouth

1973 - Mainstream Newspapers

Late 1980's - Daily sales of Newspapers falls due to news being consumed through TV and Radio.

Textual Analysis Task 1 x

Britz
Drama about a brother and sister British born and muslim, who are pulled in different directions by their personal experiences in post 9/11 Britain.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vzTGicd7slI&feature=PlayList&p=UzR0uyH6LTQ

The Britz is a drama based programme about a brother and sister who are British born and muslim. They are both pulled towards different directions by their personal experiences in post 9/11 Britain. Therefore, the drama features the difficult days in which they are both faced with and very Islamic ways to show how Muslim are represented and how the Post 9/11 has created a moral panic. Society being on/having high security/surveillance can create a moral panic therefore, making the society even more scared and think as if there is a lot of Terrorism however, it is only done to protect. On the other hand a lot of security and police searches, creates a hype as many people get angry with the fact that the police accuse and check many people who are not muslim and police who do search muslims are often offended as they feel as if they are being accused of being a terrorist and they are not.

The main issues and debates that are created in the drama are mostly through the social and historical events with some views from the political and economical side of things and also the ideologies in which muslims believe in to be different to what other religions and people believe. Representation of muslims, moral panic, post 9/11 and control of the media creates issues and debates in which the society thus creating a moral panic.

One debate in which the drama can compare with is the whole debate about post 9/11 and muslims being part of the whole attack. Post 9/11, people in society become more aware as to what is happening around them and what may happen. Therefore, creates a moral panic as the society is scared and are more careful when traveling and on the look out for anything suspicious. A scene from the drama shows the main character Sohail, break into a house as he is under surveillance and acting suspicious outside a shop as the shop keeper watches him. He is the target just because he is muslim however, it is a set-up and proves that muslims are accused of doing things which they may not have done. People in society look out to find anything suspicious and may make false accusations.
Moral panic – People hear about these things on the news / through the radio / in newspapers and it creates the society to be more aware and scared of what may happen and what is happening around us. The scene from the drama Britz which shows the organization come together and watching people and their houses creates a moral panic, knowing that we are being watched and the amount of security leads people to think that we are not safe and need the extra security and cameras around.
Ownership and the people who control the media play a big part in the film and within society. Marxism - the middle class white men to feedback and to their job by maintaining and asserting their authority. What we get told from the media we are made to believe as the media - (such as in the film) for people in society to believe that Muslims are the main cause of Terrorism and are Terrorists, leading on to the theory of all group of the Islamic ethnicity are targeted as Terrorists, and within society looked upon differently, creating a divide and the Muslim race to rebel to try and prove that it is not right and who they really are.
The drama 'Britz' is a very good example as to how the British born muslim race is now represented as it shows the challenges they are faced with around them and towards other people and how hard they have to fight and convince the ones around them they are not Terrorists. They do this by the use of MIGRAIN. The costumes worn by the characters - Sohail main character and his sister and college friends dress casually as they go to college and are now mature and dree in english clothing as they are brought up in Britain despite what religion they are and what they should be wearing according to their religion. Colonialism - This could come into play, as the children are British born as their parents have come over to the UK and are noe living here, effects what they believe in and the way that they dress as they are influenced by what is around them and the way they have been bought up and where they have brush off on them and take in some of the British ways. The mother however, stereotypically wears indian clothing - a suit. As the mother she is around the house as she is the nuturer of the family and the housewife to her husband.
In the praying scene of the drama, they are dressed covering their hair by the males wearing a hat to cover their head and females wearing a scarf covering the hair and head too. The father of the family wears a typical gown worn by muslims.
The mise-en-scene and the setting of where and what has been placed within the scene may also be doen to show the way they are living - a muslim family living British ways. The scene in the kitchen when eating shows the family sitting around the table a historical and led on like ritual - sitting around the table at dinner time takes place, which shows the British ways they live. Showing the change within society and homes of ethnic minorities in Britain.
